I had to visit for Halloween. I looked it up first. The house is a mere shell of a building and is not furnished. Only a sketch adorns a wall and that's about it. Still a cool place whether you're a Poe fan or not. One room is set up to the style of a person with means in that time would look like but nothing of Poe's is in the house. 3 stories and a cellar. Very narrow and steep stairs, not for handicap or wheelchairs.
Wonderful location to spend about an hour or two learning. The park rangers are very well informed and helpful. Definitely a must see for any Poe fan. And there’s a reading room filled with his works if anyone is interested in reading the works.
Such a cool spot in a very unassuming location. Free to visit, though there are books and mementos for purchase. Great for those who love Poe but also just love old architecture and history! Yes, you get to go into the creepy basement. We parked on the street in front of the housing development next door for free easily.
Interesting exhibition on Poe and his years in this house. The museum has a very relaxed atmosphere and you are free to explore at your own pace. Very friendly staff and good information signs and posters gave a good overview of Poe’s life and work. The short film (8 minutes) was well worth seeing. I recommend this museum even to people who are not particularly familiar with Poe as it is also a good image of life at that time (1840’s)
Free, thanks to the National Park Service! Great perspective on life firing Poe's stay here and Poe's contributions to literature. Really enjoyed the gardens, too! Thanks for the garden tour, Connie and Ruth!
A nice, free historic attraction that gives you a small peek into Edgar Allan Poe’s life in Philly. Self-paced tour so you can take as long as you want. Cute little gift shop.
Pretty neat place. You can get a card that allows you to do a self guided tour. The only furnished room is the Poe Reading Room. Visiting the cellar was creepy (keeping in line with Poe). Make sure you get your picture taken by the raven in the gardens outside. There is no admission fee but it is only open on the weekends.
I usually only think of Richmond, VA when I think of E.A.P. (probably because I’m a Virginian), so this was pretty cool to see on the map when I was looking for things to check out while visiting Philly. NPS Rangers were super friendly despite it being pretty packed with 45-mins to go before closing. Luckily for me, most of the people were exiting as I was entering so I had plenty of room to walk around the pretty tight quarters for the self-guided tour. Very cool to be in the place where Poe was when he was writing some of his more seminal works. Place definitely felt dark and morbid; solid spot to create some macabre literature.
